Munters Consulting was founded as a sole proprietorship in 2008 in Gouda, the Netherlands. At that time, the founder Paul Munters had worked for almost 15 years in international development assistance. As associate professor in international- and development economics at the University of Amsterdam, as young expert for the delegation of the European Commission in Haiti, as technical expert for the International Labour Organisation Regional Office Asia Pacific in Thailand, and as consultant for two Dutch training and consultancy firms (MDF and ECORYS).

Through the experiences gained in these positions, it was considered the right time to start a firm on its own. Initially the assignments were concentrated on project development and training in the field of public finance management and local governance. This matured into local economic development, social accountability and public private partnerships.

In 2015, Munters Consulting expanded its field of operations into supporting technical innovation in the area of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Netherlands and abroad. Although these projects vary from case to case, they do involve private small enterprises and start-ups, but also large companies that operate in the area of green energy and energy efficiency.

Munters Consulting became a private limited company since 2018. This increased the possibilities to participate in consortia and engage in partnerships with other firms.
